Maria Michałowska

Maria Michałowska (1925-2018) was a Polish artist whose multidisciplinary practice involved painting, drawing, and photography. She was also a professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology and one of the pioneers of Conceptualism in Poland.

As one of the founders of the Wrocław Group (together with Zdzisław Jurkiewicz, Jan Chwałczyk, Jerzy Rosołowicz, among others), Michałowska emerged as a voice within the experimental landscape of 1970s Polish art. Her work examines the terrain between structural analysis and poetic presence, often using seriality, repetition, and systems to explore perception, subjectivity, and the politics of space.

Though mainly associated with structuralism and conceptualism, Michałowska has consistently foregrounded visuality and material experience in her work. For her, conceptualism was a liberating lens, prompting new approaches without disavowing the emotional and aesthetic dimensions of form.
